CHOOSING PERFECT HANDBAG

Updated: Jun 30, 2021

With all the choice on offer, it is difficult to choose the ideal handbag for yourself; here, we look at some tips to help you narrow down the choice.

Look at your wardrobe

Are most of your clothes a black and white combination? Just because an animal print jacket looks great doesn't mean that it suits you; look at the accessories that you are likely to wear with it, as well as at the colour of your sleeve - for example, if you have gold or brown eyelets, black or brown is appropriate for jewellery.

What is your personality? abstract or dramatic? If you are a romantic, handbags that are large and soft will suit you; if you have an intelligent catlike quality, a classic wristwatch and a clutch bag will look great.

Take a good look at your clothes

Sometimes we just want to tell someone how pretty we see ourselves and don't want to be told the truth. Start by taking a good look at the clothes you are wearing. Are they in pristine condition or were they last year's machine on sale at the local charity shop? Clothes menders and dry cleaning bills will be adding a lot to the cost of your next piece.

Also take a look at the hem line of your trousers, do they start at the top of your shoes and finish at the edge of your calf, or is your hemline too short and ends in the middle?

What colours are most flattering for you?

Why are you wearing this colour? Do you like the feel of this colour? Do you think that it will blend in with most of the colours that you wear? Taking a honest friend along for advice if necessary. Also, if you are not sure which colours are best for you, look online for some colour charts and check out some of your favourite colours in a magazine - if you look at a colour closely you will usually know the colour that will suit you.

An extra tip when choosing your metallic garments - many manufacturers make their metallic products in a wide range of finishes. Some with a shiny texture, others with a satiny finish or simply arillous patent effect. If you are going for a shiny look, try a material like matt or shiny velvet, it's not too shiny, but it will give that shiny effect. If you are going for a satiny finish, try nubuck or suede. Sometimes, when buying a jacket, it's also a good idea to buy one with a metallic lining - one or two layers will give a just-so-fashion-able look. That way you can easily switch your outfit from day to night if your mood takes you.

Colour

Women are fans of 'matching' their colours, so why not try to match your handbag too? Don't match your handbag to your clothes - go for colours that will work harmoniously together. A hot colour this season is mossy green, particularly when combined with a more earthy tone, like brown or red.

In general, wear handbags that contrast a great deal with your skin tone, eyes and hair colour. If you are not sure which colours are best, look at some pictures online, line a few of them up and see which ones match your best colours.

Handbags with exotic colours can catch people's attention and can look great, but only if they are the right colours for your face.

Size

It's important to be slim andanned when wearing a handbag. Large handbags that hang at the bottom of your clutch can make you look even bigger. If you don't like to carry large bags itself, but prefer to stick to a small one then buy a clutch that is bigger than your usual handbag. A small clutch bag will look very proportionate and will make you look more fashionable.

Price

With handbags, the price is of course the most important measurement. Finding a good-priced luxury designer handbag isn't always easy, but when you do you'll know you have bag of a bag to spoil yourself.

However, it is easy to get qualityuxury handbag that perfectly fits your price. Buying a leather or monsoon-proof designer bag will improve your image. Whatever your choice, pick one that suits your lifestyle and body shape.
